چکیده

Exchanging e-mail messages is one of the most popular applications on the Internet after web access and file sharing. Email communication uses the Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) thus allowing it to use the best feature in the internet – adaptability to any available bandwidth. From a quality of service perspective, an unspecified bit rate is sufficient for e-mail as an application. In this paper, we focus on analyzing e-mail as an interactive process. Intuitively, humans, being end users, have the greatest impact on the quantification of this process and its translation into resource needs and utilizations. Analysis indicates that servers are the busiest during peak work hours of early morning and early evenings. E-mail activity exactly follows user activity during the day. Also, the arrival and departure processes at servers are Poissonian in nature and statistical tests confirm that.

Structural and Temporal Properties of E-mail and Spam Networks

In this paper we present a large-scale measurement study and analysis of e-mail traffic collected on an Internet backbone link. To the best of our knowledge this is one of the largest studies of network-wide behavior of e-mail traffic. We consider e-mail networks connecting senders and receivers that have communicated via e-mail, capturing their social interactions. Our study focuses on tempora...

Personality Trait Based Simulation Model of the E-mail System

Within the area of criminal and terrorist social network analysis, there is little research being done on analysing the communication behavior of criminal and terrorist groups. In this paper, we describe the development of a conceptual simulation model of the e-mail system, which is based on the use of personality trait dimensions to model the e-mail traffic behavior of e-mail users. This conce...

FFT Traffic Classification-Based Dynamic Selected IP Traffic Offload Mechanism for LTE HeNB Networks

Traffic offloading is a promising technique to alleviate the traffic load in LTE core networks. Based on 3GPP “SIPTO” (Selected IP Traffic Offload) architecture, this paper proposes dynamic SIPTO mechanism (D-SIPTO) for traffic offloading in LTE HeNB networks, which combines fast fourier transform (FFT) based IP traffic classification scheme (FFTTCS) with the dynamic traffic offload path select...

Analyzing the Social Structure and Dynamics of E-mail and Spam in Massive Backbone Internet Traffic

E-mail is probably the most popular application on the Internet, with everyday business and personal communications dependent on it. Spam or unsolicited e-mail has been estimated to cost businesses significant amounts of money. However, our understanding of the network-level behavior of legitimate e-mail traffic and how it differs from spam traffic is limited. In this study, we have passively c...
